An elephant with a raised trunk is a symbol of good fortune. There is an another emblem of luck, the Ladybug. It is a love symbol too. Both are perfect gift for newborns :)

Our new project is finished. It is a little frog - pattern - own. I think it turned out quite nice :o). Does a knitted frog need clothes? I think so if SHE is Miss Frog ;o) She got a knitted collar and a ruffled dress. All pieces of the frog are knitted flat. I’m not a fan of seaming but there are lots of knitters who prefer straight needles.

My elder son said he needed some new funs in his reading and studying. Oh, yes, he likes to have something unique and something very funny ;o)) So, me and Ala were working on knitted cat bookmarks. They are made from acrylic yarn, so if my son gets dirty he can toss them in the washer. He said the bookmarks are really fun and great to mark place in his books.
The bookmarks are worked up quite quickly (some hours) and they are quite easy to knit, using mostly stockinette stitches to create the items.

I have some toys to share! The photos above show the elephant I knitted from the Safari Friends pattern, which is Knitting at Knoon pattern. This was given as a baby shower gift for a little girl and it was very well received. (Sorry for the quality of the photos -- I didn't get a chance to take them in daylight!)

Here is my version of knitted cupcakes. Yesterday I finished them. And I am very pleased with how the cupcakes turned out :o)) I wasn’t sure about fake food either and I always wondered why people knitted food stuff. But I realized knitted little cupcakes are VERY useful, they could be great pincushions for my sewing needles.

Tom Bear is made from quite small amounts of yarn. He measures: sitting about 17 cm (6,7 inch), standing: 28 cm (11 inch). All pieces are knitted in round.

Here is a knitted hare girl. She is a great toys for all ages. We hope you enjoy making her. The Hare Girl measures about 24 cm (9.5 inch) to tip of ears. All pieces are knitted flat.

MATERIALS:
Needles size 2 (2.75mm)
Crochet hook, size 2.50 mm
Leftovers from different projects of a similar gauge in DK or worsted : for hare’s body – brown, grey, yellow or other, any color yarn for clothes and booties.
If you use thicker yarn and bigger size of needles you get a bigger toy.

Little Hare Boy

Here is my next knitted hare.
The Little Hare Boy measures about 24 cm (9.5 inch) to tip of ears. All parts of him were knitted in the round with minimal sewing.
To knit the toy I used soft medium yarn and DPNS 2,5 mm. I knitted him using my own pattern.All pieces of bodies are knitted using stockinette sitches, for ears I use garter stitches.

Sunny Teddy Bear

Today I would like to show my knitted teddy bear from an adorable Jean Greenhowe knitting patterns collection "Jean Greenhowe's Traditional Favourites". I think the teddy is a perfect project for advanced knitters and the teddy has been designed to look like the teddies from my childhood. He is traditional in appearance the design.

This little guy is knit with yellow acrylic yarn with 2.5 mm needles.

I made one little modification in the pattern - my teddy bear has bigger eyes.

I really enjoyed working with the pattern, it knitted up so nicely! My teddy's name is Promyczek (Sun Ray) because of his yellow body. The seated Teddy measures 22 cm (8.7 inch) from the base of the body to the top of the head.

Pattern: 221x Flamingo Beach Party by Fiber Trends
Yarn: Cascade 220 Wool and Berocco Swizzle Bright
Needle: size 10.5

Observations: The eyelash yarn ran out on one of the breasts (you can see it if you look closely enough) and I found later that there was an instruction hidden in the back to stop at row 38 or 39 and then devide the eyelash yarn. Just beware. Also, the legs are written to be knit flat and sewn up later on. One of my legs is sewn, the other is knit in the round. The only way I can tell the difference it to actually squeeze the legs to figure it out.

Knitted hares were wonderful Easter gifts for my family. To knit the toys I used soft medium yarn and DPNS 2,5 mm. I knitted them using my own pattern. I filled hares bodies with poly granules. Their face features are hand embroidered. All pieces of bodies are knitted using stocking sitches, for ears I use garter stitches.
Hares have clothes in happy colours. Every toy is about 9 inches (23 cm) hight. Look, how funny they are :o))

Of course since it was Easter and I have been working on larger projects, I needed to get my toy fix in. So I made an Easter bunny for my kiddo.

There was a lot of seam sewing involved, but the effort was worth it. DD LOVED finding this little bunny in her Easter basket in the morning.

I used Galway wool for the cream and Cascade 220 for the pink. I've found that Galway cream doesn't felt that well - you can still see the stitch definition after FOUR washings in the machine.

Pattern is from Bear Brain. It's the Knitted, Felted, Jointed Rabbit and you can buy the pattern from Patricia Wulff's website. There is another pattern that's offered - a vest for the bunny - but I felt that it was too expensive.

Baby Bobbi Bear

Meet Baby Bobbi Bear! I used Bernat Cottontots for him and size 8 dpn's. The pattern calls for Blue Sky organic cotton or double-stranded alpaca, but because I knew he would test my skills a little bit (i.e., provisional cast-on, short-rows, etc.), I thought I would try with something I already had in my stash. I'm happy with the way he turned out, but would probably go down a needle size if I used the Bernat Cottontots yarn again. This little guy will be a gift for one of the five babies I am knitting for due between now and June. Blogged here.

A Crocheted Hare wearing knitted clothes

Making a thread crochet toys is a very enjoyable and fun hobby. The time before Christmas was for knitted elves, and the weeks before Easter it is great time for making Easter toys.

I have some ideas for Easter toys already but I want to show one of my sister's crocheted Easter toys, made on last April. It is an Easter hare.

This cute lil long legged guy is about 15,7 inches (40 cm) hight. The pattern comes from a Polish magazine for women. But in the project my sister made some modifications - hare's legs are long, hands are with thumbs, all clothes are knitted.

One of my co-workers wanted to get back into knitting by making a simple toy. I showed her Knitty and she was off. Unfortunately, she couldn't quite get the hang of the pattern she picked: Bubby. So she bequeathed me the yarn and her pattern print out. Three months later, Bubby was born.

I'm not sure I like him - he's kind of floppy and awkward - but the Boy has taken to him as a stuffed bear representation of himself, so there's that. And I get to give him away - there's that too.

I made these three tiny amigurumi by Anna Paula Rimoli - one a day - for the three pregnant ladies at the Lettuce Knit sn'b: Jendricks, Craftygrrrl & tapeheads

They're made, as the author of the pattern suggests, with oddments of worsted yarn. In order, we have beige merino from King Cole (bunny hat); pink Phentex (Jumblie); blue and green Lamb's Pride (robot parade); and white Cascade 220 (skull socks o' fury). The eyes are felt, the smiles are embroidery thread, and there is a ribbon on the cactus. The Boy feels that they are BFF - so maybe the babies will be, too.

Here is my knitted koala. This adorable little bear is from "Knitted Animals" by Jean Greenhowe. The pattern is easy and pretty fast to knit. Koala measures 12 cm (4.7 inch) from top to toe, excluding the ears.

I've just finished another Jean Greenhowe dolly. This one is Little Red Riding Hood. I made her for my husband's cousin's daughter who will be two in December. Her grandmother (hubby's aunt) asked me to make a simple, indestrucible doll and this is the result. I'm less than thrilled with the feet and am considering doing something to them. She still needs some ribbon added for a belt and around the wrists, but she is very cuddly and very sweet I think!

After all the cute bunnies, monkeys and bears around here, I thought it was time for some wildlife that was, um... "challenged" in the cute department. But you know, you can make almost anything cute by knitting it.

This is Cris, short for Condyluria cristata:

Cris is a star-nosed mole. I have a deep and abiding love for star-nosed moles, because they are the only semi-aquatic mole species (they can swim!) and they burrow deep underground and grab grubs and other wiggly food with their 22 amazing nose tentacles (read much more about them here). These aren't the moles that tear up your lawn - those would be the eastern and hairy-tale moles, if you live in the eastern U.S. as I do.

The star-nosed mole can be the totem animal for any of you underwater archaeologists, tunnel diggers or grub-eaters out there.

And if you see a strange-looking critter in your yard, don't scream - knit it! I promise you'll love it afterwards.

Hello fellow toy knitters! I haven't posted here before, but I've been having a lot of fun with my toy knitting recently and wanted to share my latest FO.

Project Stats:
Pattern: Mr. Dangly , but knit in the round. I used the modified numbers for the head that I found here and I knit the ears differently than written because I didn't have the pattern with me when I started them (but I do like how they turned out).
Yarn: Plymouth Encore DK in bright pink (#1385) and yellow (#215)
Needles: size 3 bamboo dpns
Size: monkey sized! I haven't measured her, but she's a little shorter than Mizu (my 9week old kitten) is long.

As a note, sewing the head on the body is very tricksy, perhaps because I knit it in the round, or perhaps because I have trouble with the sewing up. Either way, the head is flopsy and I need to think of a better way of attaching the two before I make up another one. Any ideas?

I haven't yet named her, but I'm really pleased with how she turned out. Any thoughts on a name? I first thought about Bella, but somebody else suggested Ramona, which I never would have thought of! She stands about 7 and 1/2 inches tall and was made from acrylic (I know, I know ...) yarn. I used a mercerized cotton for her little dress. The pattern was from Fuzzymitten.com and it was very easy to follow. In fact, I've already cast on for another little bunny.

I finished my Big Foot Bunny! His pattern is in Zoe Mellor Knitted Toys. I made this guy in woolease that I had stashed. He's not soft enough for my 6 month old but he's the perfect shelf sitter. My Grandmother-in-law has a birthday this month and I'm thinking that he would LOVE to go home with her. I included a picture of the bunny before the bow tie since the bow adds personality. The pattern was simple but had lots of pieces to sew in (the soles and the ears). It took me two weeks to get motivated enough to finish it up but I am sure glad that I did. I opted to skip a mouth so that he had a classic toy look. Next on my list? Something from Lucinda Guy...

I have never joined a KAL so this is my first post! I based this doll on the dolly in Zoe Mellor's Nursery Knits. My daughter requested that she have no hat and hair just like this. Hair is always a challenge for me so having it specially requested was a HUGE challenge. My daughter also designed the color scheme for her clothes. It was lots of fun and my daughter loves her so it was worth the effort. I'm currently working on the Big Foot Bunny from Knitted Toys. I'll post when I have something that even resembles an animal!

Mods: Used worsted weight instead of DK. Won't felt it. I'm on the fence regarding whether or not I'm going to knit the toupee.
Thoughts: LOVE it. I think my nephew will be thrilled.

Yarn: Odd bits of Wool-Ease (green and natural) and Red Heart (blue)
Needles: Sz 8 Clover bamboo circulars
Dates: early July-July 14
For: The Neph who turned 4 on Saturday!
Mods: Didn't do as many colors, went with a larger gauge yarn and needle, didn't follow the pattern exactly (as I seemingly can't read), was a touch shorter than the finished measurements.
Thoughts: Cute! Went quickly, though I was disappointed not to use up more stash yarn. Must find more uses for it.

Also: There is a minor error in the pattern - it calls for you to cast on 12 stitches, and then to increase in the first row to 12 stitches. You should cast on 8 instead.

Here is a duck that I knit for my sister from the book Knitted Toys by Fiona McTague. I changed the feet and legs as they were knit flat and the feet were made from two pieces and then it was all sewn together. Instead I just made the legs like socks with some extra shaping in the toes. The yarn was Dale of Norway Baby Ull. I stuffed the Duckie with wool and made up a little fringed scarf for him.

My sister raises ducks so I thought she would find this little toy funny and I noticed the last time I visited Jeanne that the Duckie had a prominant place on her fireplace. I was so flattered!

This is the little teddy bear from Simple Knits for Cherished Babies. He's going to be given away next weekend at a baby shower for a little boy named Mason. Little Mason is just two weeks old now, so this little teddy bear is just the perfect size for a perfect little boy. I used Cascade 220 and size 4 needles. He was a quick little knit!

This is the mouse I knit from the free pattern at Purl Bee. I made up the aran sweater and scarf. Abel was going to a St. Patrick's day party with me so he needed a green sweater and aran seemed appropriate for the holiday! His body is knit with Alice Starmore Campion. Someone gave me a ball of it to knit and it is a wonderful yarn!

Oh and he is based on the title character of Abel's Island by William Steig. This is a wonderful children's book that I highly recommend!

Finally now I can start, but I can't blog about it over at my blog, so I'm so glad I have this forum!

I got my yarn (Knitpicks Palette) and my pattern, Felted Fish from the Knitters Stash book. This used to be available from Patternworks as a kit also... hey, it still is!

My only problem now is that the pattern asks for sport or worsted weight, but I thought both would make too large of fish. I'm using fingering weight to make them smaller... so what needles do I use? Are 4s too small for a felted project?

Soft and Fluffy

I'm in a few Harry Potter KALs and I was seeing a lot of house scarves and hats and stuff like that, but I wanted to do something really original.

So I knit Lord Voldemort. I used the basic person pattern in World Of Knitted Toys, except that I ignored the directions for the nose, since he doesn't have one. I sewed his robes rather than knit them, for time's sake more than anything else.

This is the kitty from book, Natural Knits for Babies and Moms . I really like this book a lot. The patterns are simple, yet elegant. The kitty was a pretty fast knit. This little kitty was gifted to a very dear little 3 year old boy as part of his Easter basket.

I used Cascade 220 wool and size 7 needles. I'm looking forward to making another one, except I think I'm going to reverse the colors for the striping since I still have plenty of the yarn left over from this kitty.

A Great Beginner Toy

I designed this knit block to be a first project for the local chaper of International MOMS Club. Each face has a different stitch pattern with increasing difficulty. It was a fun little project, and I hope it gets lots of play time in my home... so much better than the plastic toys around here!

Hello all! I'm so glad this KAL exists, else I would have kept looking and dreaming about toys, but never actually casting on. I'm nearly finished (well, with the big part anyway) on Kate, who is a bit bigger than I'd imagined (guess I should use a ruler next time... :)

I'm using the yarn the pattern recommended, but am doing it on two circulars instead of dpns. Here are some pics of my progress:

and a cute one for scale, as you can see Kate will be nearly as big as my little girl, who is already in love with her new toy :)

Hopefully, I'll have a finished project to share soon!

Hello everyone! I’m so glad to have found this knitalong. I have only knit a few toys so far, but I have plans (and yarn, of course) for more. I will post a picture of the kitty I recently made in the few days. It’s great fun for me to make the toys and watch them transform into their own little personalities. Than it Did for me to Knit This!

I made this cute little rabbit for my daughter for Easter.

This is the Rabbit from Natural Knits for Babies & Moms. The yarn is Blue Sky Alpacas Organic Cotton in Nut Brown and Bone (and a teeny amount of RYC Cashsoft in Donkey for the embroidered face). I used US7 bamboo needles (I think that is the size anyway- it has been a while- I used whatever was called for in the pattern). This was a quick knit and even the finishing didn't take that long (about a week start to finish).

I wish the seaming was better, but overall I am pleased with the results (I have since taken a finishing class and I expect future efforts to be more "professionally" finished). This was my first knitted toy and with a 15 month old daughter and a little boy on the way, I expect you'll be seeing more of me around here. More pictures, et cetera are available at my blog.

Hi everyone! I love making toys. I think my first was the dim sum from Knitty, although I quickly moved on to toys for people. Jess Hutch's rabbit is so great to knit that I keep meaning to do it again.

Right now I'm designing a knit toy, so I can't say too much about it except that I think you'll like it when it's ready.

Pattern for knitted lion and tiger

It's from the 1940s and is available on the V&A Museum website in their knitting section. The rest of the section is worth looking at too.

I haven't knitted it yet, it looks fab. It's on my 'To Do' list!

Thanks for allowing me to join. Looks like a fun blog - talking about knitted toys. Something very warm, old fashion and quaint about them, which I just love.

I have a 5mth old boy and I have started to knit toys for him.

Firstly, Debbie Bliss' sheep:

Project Specifications:

Pattern: Sheep from Debbie Bliss' Farmyard Knits
Yarn: Jo Sharp Silkroad DK for the body and Jo Sharp DK for face, feet and horns
Needles: 3.25mm
Notes: Getting the stuffing 'right' was quite challenging - that is, firm enough to keep the legs upright, without distorting the body

The second project is a rabbit, using a vintage pattern that I found on display in a quirky shop in my area. It sells a mix of vintage clothes, old china, yarn, fabric and other crafty stuff. They wouldn't sell the pattern, but they copied it for me.

And here is how it turned out - it was finished on Easter Sunday.

Project Specifications:

Pattern: Vintage Pattern 'The Rabbit Family' - Father Rabbit knitted
Yarn: Freedom 100% wool by Twilleys of Stamford (50g, 50m balls)
Needles: 8mm (yarn label specifies 10mm)
Notes: Father Rabbit took 7 balls (6 and a third really) knitted at a tension of 12st in 10cm

Thanks for letting me join your KAL. Knitting toys seems to be so fun and creative, I couldn't ignore this group. While I have both Fiona McTague and Family Circle's toy books plus a few scattered patterns in my library, I've yet to sit down and knit a toy. I've recently ordered Stone and Lowe's Adorable Sock Dolls to Make & Love since the toys seem to be as the title describes, just too adorable.

I like the FO's I've seen posted and will check back regularly to see the wonderful things you guys knit up. In my case, it'll be a month before I have anything to show since other obligations are keeping me from devoting much time to knitting.

In the meantime, have fun knitting and being creative.

I started knitting this little guy up this past weekend and finished him up tonight. The pattern was the Fuzzy Lamb (opens as a PDF).

I love his little tail! And the directions from the pattern were too cute. "Sew tail to sheep bum."

Easy, fast and a great pattern.

Hello! I am currently working on the teddy from the Mother Bear Project - on the Knitty Gritty website.

I started the bear a few weeks ago, but haven't done much since getting the main body knitting completed. I did sew up the head last night, and next I start on the sweater arms. It's coming along.

I've been reluctant to finish, as I don't have another project to start. I do have a UFO on the needles (baby blanket) but it's really not inspiring me...so perhaps knitting toys will get me over the hump for the time being!

Looking forward to seeing the other projects and knitters out there!

I love the idea of this KAL, I love to knit silly toys. In fact, I've already got one done!

No, it's not a Tribble.

It's a Huggable Hedgehog from Fiber Trends! I love his pudgy little belly.

I cast Sal on Sunday at about 3 and had him all felted by 9:30 that same night. (1000 bonus points and a cookie for those of you who get why his name is Sal, hint: look at the colors)

I've already got requests for 2 more hedgies and will probably make way more than that! The pattern is wonderfully well written and easy to follow.

Welcome to the Knitted Toys KAL! This will be an ongoing KAL, and you can knit your toys from any resource you like. Several books and free online patterns have been listed in the sidebar, and I'd welcome any more references you can send my way.
I know there are many more single toy patterns in many more books, and you are welcome to knit those as well, but I didn't want to have an enormous list in the sidebar (it's already pretty big).

To join the KAL please send an email to knittoys AT gmail DOT com (replace the at and the dot with the correct symbols), and I'll send you the blogger invite.

When posting, please tag your posts with the name of the pattern, and the author's name (if from a book) or the website. Many of the books have the same general title, and having the author's name will make it much easier to search out others who have knit your pattern.

Included in the free patterns sidebar are patterns for cat toys all well - who says all toys have to be for people? Heck, you can knit hamster toys for all I care! :)
