Pattern for knitted lion and tiger

I've just noticed that someone asked in the comments on a previous post about whether there was a lion pattern around.

Well there is:

It's from the 1940s and is available on the V&A Museum website in their knitting section. The rest of the section is worth looking at too.
I haven't knitted it yet, it looks fab. It's on my 'To Do' list!

How I love the Victoria & Albert museum's website! The V&A is a Shangri-La that I dream of someday visiting in person...

The lion/tiger pattern is also listed at this site, http://www.cabbagepatchtreasures.co.uk/afghan02.htm which has lots of other old and traditional knitted toy patterns. Just in case you hadn't seen it. :)

Has anyone attempted this pattern yet? I have just got to the mane... and am having a REALLY hard time getting my head around the kind of loop stitch it calls for. HELP!

I just made this lion, and I had problems with the mane, too. When I made the mane the way the pattern called for, it came out sort of like a hairnet.

I think if you used a loop stitch the way it is shown on www.knittinghelp.com , it might turn out okay.

In the end, I just cut lengths of yarn, tied them around individual stitches, and unplied them so they made a mane that looked more like doll hair than like the photo in the V&A pattern. It worked pretty well, though.

Hello, I am knitting the leo the lion pattern. I am on The sides and am wondering when on the 11th and 12th rows, it says K.all stitches - do I knit all stitches on just those 5 stitches or the entire 40. Thanks Katie

Kimberly, the one I made (with size 5 needles) was about a foot long and maybe four or five inches high.
